Kiekie is Afrikaans for a snapshot.

One photo a day, with the people you love.

Once a day, at a surprise moment in your own day, Kiekie asks: “Show your family what you’re doing right now.” One candid photo each. They meet in a private collage that only your family can see.

Made for South African families with someone in another city, or another country. Johannesburg, London or Perth: each person is asked during their own daytime.

Kiekie’s Today screen for Saturday 17 October: a private family collage, with emoji reactions and the week along the top.
Ouma pouring tea from a floral teapot at a wooden table in a sunlit South African kitchen.
Pieter holding a takeaway coffee on a wet London pavement, with a red double-decker bus in the rain behind him.
Gunsteling dogter kneeling in the sand to pat a sandcastle on a bright Perth beach.
A scruffy dog sitting on a Cape Town porch beside muddy boots and a blue bowl. Anna’s photo.
Kiekie’s daily prompt on a phone.

Kiekienow

Show your family what you’re doing right now.

Connection, not content.

Not another chat to scroll.

The family WhatsApp already has the photos. They arrive between the messages, and then they are gone, up the thread. Kiekie is a small daily ritual instead of a feed: no likes, no algorithm, no strangers.

The prompt does the asking

You photograph whatever is already in front of you. The coffee on the stoep. The rain on a London window. The dog asleep on the couch.

The day stays put

Everyone’s photos sit together: your family’s Saturday. You can step back through earlier days whenever you like.

Everyone has a place in it

Ouma sees your office. You see her garden. A reply is an emoji, which is enough. There are no comments and no likes.

How it works

Three quiet steps. A day with no photo is simply a day with no photo. There is nothing to keep up.

  1. A gentle nudge, in your own day

The ask arrives at a random moment in your waking hours, on your own clock. Nobody is woken at 3am.

  2. One photo of what is in front of you

It is shrunk on your phone before it uploads, which keeps the data cost down, and the location is removed. You can post any time until midnight where you are.

  3. A collage that is only for your family

The photos meet in one place for the day. Tap one to send an emoji back.

The December Yearbook

A printed book of your family’s year: one ordinary moment from the days that have a photo. It is the first thing Kiekie plans to sell. Joining the list does not buy the book, and skipping it changes nothing about the app.
